Posted July 1, 2011 09:32:00 The Tasmanian Government wants to make changes to the Police Commissioner's role to ensure it is independent.
Police Minister David O'Bynre told yesterday's estimates hearing a draft amendment to the Police Services Act had been "circulated for consideration" to the head of the police force, the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Police Association.
The changes involve the section of the Act which outlines the Police Commissioner's role.
"[We want] to ensure that the independence of the Commissioner and the role that the commissioner plays is separated from the political sphere," he said.
The Police Commissioner's role came under scrutiny three years ago, when the former Commissioner Jack Johnston was charged with disclosing official secrets to the Police Minister.
The charges were later thrown out of court.
