Updated June 30, 2011 12:58:00 Tasmania's Human Services Minister has revealed public housing tenants will be hit hard under budget cuts to her department.
Cassy O'Connor was grilled in an estimates hearing about $11 million worth of savings which she has to find in the Human Services budget next financial year.
While admitting her department is significantly underfunded, she says she will sign off on the state budget.
Under pressure for a breakdown of the savings, Ms O'Connor revealed $3 million will come from scrapping the pensioner rent "holiday" for Housing Tasmania clients.
She told the committee almost 6,000 pensioners rely on this handout, which amounts to about $10 a week.
Liberal spokeswoman Jacquie Petrusma attacked some of the savings measures, including scrapping the rent rebate.
But Ms O'Connor says the Liberals have brought no alternatives to the table.
Ms Petrusma alerted the minister to an embarrassing mistake on the Disability Services' new website which has had a $130,000 makeover.
The website directs users to a map of South Africa.
Ms Petrusma questioned whether outsourcing disability services to South Africa was part of the plan.
"On your website, Disability Services South has a map and when you go on the map it takes you to South Africa," she said.
The Minister was taken aback.
"Oh Botswana? I can reassure you that there is absolutely no plan what so ever to outsource any component of Disability Services to South Africa," she said.
Ms O'Connor thanked her parliamentary colleague for pointing out the mistake which has now been fixed.
